The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
