Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
